One of the first steps to take before you decide you would like a new fence installed on your property is locating your lots lines. Most cities and townships require a fence permit and one of the questions that will be asked is where will the fence be located on your property and how far from the lot line. Each city has their own zoning rules regarding fence placement which is another reason to know where your lot lines are. If you are unsure of the location, the only sure way to know is to have a survey of the lot done. Before you invest in the cost of the survey there are a few ways you can look for the lines. Look for stakes placed in the back corners of the lot, ask your neighbors or look at the site drawing from the city.
Having the lot lines clearly marked before the fence is installed is required by all fence installers and will prevent questions during installation with your neighbors.
